What We Do

Training and Resource Provider to Local Public Defense Counsel

Beginning in Fall 2025, ALIJ will offer free trainings to local lawyers who represent indigent clients. The goal of the training program is to improve the quality of defense services locally, and thereby improve case outcomes for indigent clients. We will provide excellent trainings, presented by some of the best local practitioners, utilizing cutting-edge and evidence-based pedagogical tools.

Direct Client Services

We zealously defend indigent clients facing criminal charges in Allegheny County. Every client we represent is offered the assistance of a social service advocate, who can assist clients in need to connect with job placement, housing, mental health, and substance use treatment services.

Data Collection and Analysis

There is too little public discussion or knowledge about the internal processes and outcomes of the local criminal justice system. This is so despite the fact that Allegheny County spends nearly half of its general fund on criminal legal-related costs, including over $100 million annually on the jail alone, and the system significantly impacts tens of thousands of lives every year. We hope to help change that by establishing this site as a clearinghouse for information and data focused on the local criminal legal system.

We believe that by increasing transparency and educating the public and community leaders, we can help advance safety-minded system reforms and improved case outcomes.
